The Sofia radio today broadcast an appeal in Hebrew for a foreign loan “to help the Bulgarian Government meet its responsibilities.”
The broadcast revealed that a Jew named M. Fayonov is now chief secretary of the Ministry of Propaganda. It went on to quote him as declaring that a foreign loan would be “the best solution for both the Jews in Bulgaria and the government which must atone for its past actions.”
Emphasizing that foreign aid for Bulgarian Jews would be welcomed by his government, Mr. Fayanov is also quoted in the broadcast as stating that “the Bulgarian people, too, are entitled to such aid because they did everything possible to help the Jews in days of need despite the oppression of the fascist regime.”
“The return of the Jews to their homes in Sofia and their restoration to normal life is one of the problems which the government is now trying to solve,” the broadcast said. “But a real solution is possible only if aid is received from the great democracies.”
The Sofia radio also reported today that a nation-wide conference of teachers in Hebrew schools was held in Sofia last week at which it was decided to reopen all Hebrew schools and to extend Jewish education. The conference also decided to apply to the government to replace all Hebrew books which were removed from libraries and other educational institutions.
