A feeling of excitement prevails among the Jews in Palestine in connection with the report from Cairo that it is expected that the major part of Palestine will be merged with Lebanon as a Jewish-Christian state.
This feeling was heightened by the fact that High Commissioner Gort paid a visit on Tuesday to Dr. Chaim Weizmann at Rehovoth, which lasted for several hours. Although this visit was arranged a week ago, the public nevertheless coupled it with the meetings which Roosevelt and Churchill had in Egypt with the Arab kings. Moshe Shertok, head of the political department of the Jewish Agency, was present at the conversations between the High Commissioner and Dr. Weizmann.
Arab newspapers in Palestine, commenting on the Roosevelt, Churchill meetings with Farouk and Ibn Saud, declare that the Arabs in Palestine may soon expect good news. The Mishmar, official organ of the Jewish Hashomer Hatzair party, commenting on the Cairo reports, warns against the danger of partitioning Palestine, advocating at the same time a peaceful settlement with the Palestine Arabs.
