Many Greek Jews are still being held in British concentration camps in Africa because they were members of EIAS partisan units or were supporters of the EAM, parent body of the ELAS, it was charged today by the Greek-American Council. It also asserted that Jews are confined in Greek jails for the same reason.

Pro-fascist and monarchist groups are being allowed to spread anti-Jewish propaganda and engage in anti-Semitic agitation, the council said. The newspaper “Bilinkos Berras.” organ of Christos Levantis, a member of the former Plastiras government, has published anti-Semitic articles and “systematically cultivates hatred of Jews and democracy,” the council stated. It also discloses that the Ministry of Education and Ecolesicstical Affairs appointed a representative to the Jewish community, as was done under the Metaxas dictatorship, but mass protests by Jews resulted in rescindment of the appointment.

Reviewing the persecution of Greek Jews by the Nazis during the occupation, the council discloses that as part of the EAM plan to rescue as many Jews as possible, 3,000 were enabled to emigrate to Palestine on ships guarded by units of the Bian, the EAM navy. As a token of appreciation, the Histadruth sent 250 pairs of militery shoes and a small amount of money to the guerrillas. In addition to those sent to Palestine, thousands of Jews were enabled to hide in the mountain areas held by the EIAS and many were sheltered in the homes of EAM supporters.
