Peter Bergson, chairman of the Hebrew Committee of National Liberation, has been ordered by the Board of Immigration Appeals to leave the United States by November 1, or face deportation to Palestine.

According to the Department of Justice, Bergson after entering the country on a six-months visitor’s visa, filed numerous appeals for the extension of his stay, and in April of this year was refused permission by the State Department to remain on a permanent status. He has remained illegally in this country for about a year, according to the Department of Justice.

In granting him time until November, the Board of Immigration Appeals acceded to Bergson’s request for as much time as possible to wind up his affairs. While Bergson may still have recourse to the court on a point of law, the order of the Board holds out little hope that a writ of habeas corpus, if applied for, would be granted, the Department of Justice said.
