Jews in Rumania will no longer be considered a national minority as a result of a decree issued today by the Rumanian Government regulating the status of various nationalities in the country. The decree which is of wide soope prohibits enquiring into the ethnic origin of any Rumanian citizen; it forbids using the term “ethnical origin” in any public document, and stipulates that every one may profess freely his creed and mother tongue.
Penalties are imposed for enquiring into the ethnical origin of applicants for jobs and slurs on the score of race and religion or incitement to racial hatred in speech or in writing are made legal offenses. The decree further states that persons who did not declare themselves of any nationality since 1930 and whose documents show that they are stateless will automatically be considered Rumanians.
