The Jewish elementary and secondary school here, whose building was virtually destroyed by Allied bombardments of this capital, reopened yesterday in newly renovated quarters.
Of the total enrollment of 426, the elementary section has 218, and the secondary school and the kindergarten have slightly over 100 each. the school is being financed by the Jewish community, but it is expected that the Bulgarian Government will shortly provide full financial support. Most of the pupile come from the poorest sections of the Jewish community, as the wealthier Jews prefer to send their children to private non-Jewish schools.
The Jewish Arts Circle, which was founded in 1932, but was forced to suspend during the five years the Germans dominated Bulgaria, has resumed functioning here. Within the group are dramatic troupes, musical organizations, painters, sculptors and writers. With the financial assistance of the Jewish community, the circle plans to present, this season, Sholem Aleichem’s “Tevia The Dairynan,” concerts by serveral quartets and evenings of poetry reading.
