Dr. William Filderman, president of the Union of Rumanian Jews, who it was reported recently was held under house arrest in Bucharest, is free, according to a cablegram received by the World Jewish Congress from Prime Minister Petru Groza of Rumania.
At the same time a cable was received by the Congress from Dr. Filderman and Chief Rabbi Alexander Safran, president of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Rumania, appealing for aid in the reconstruction of the ruined Jewish communities in Rumania, In their request for funds, the Rumanian Jewish leaders cited the need for help in the rebuilding or synagogues, Hebrew schools, the support of rabbis, and for the purchase of Holy Scrolls, and Hebrew and Yiddish books.
