Withdrawn from Tel Aviv; Traffic Curfew Lifted Throughout Palestine

With quiet restored throughout Palestine, military authorities today lifted the curfew prohibiting motorized traffic outside of minicipal areas during the night. The traffic curfew, introduced three weeks ago, was (##) at preventing the transportation of arms and explosives by illegal groups.

The 6th Airborne Division which was stationed in Tel Aviv to suppress possible outbreaks left the city today. Prior to their removal from the moving picture boxes and public buildings where they were stationed, the troops cleared the city of the barricades and barbed-wire positions which they had established. All amusement piece, which have been closed since the outbreaks as a result of the curfew, will reopen tonight.

Sir Allan Gordon Cunningham, new Palestine High Commissioner, is due to arrive tomorrow. Scheduled outdoor receptions for him were cancelled today as a result of bad weather.

TEL AVIV MAYOR PROTESTS LOOTING BY BRITISH SOLDIERS

Mayor Israel Rokach today reported at a session of the Tel Aviv municipal council that he has submitted a strongly worded note to the military authorities protesting the fact that British soldiers looted Jewish property during the disturbances in the city last week. The meeting adopted a resolution declaring that the Bevin statement is a betrayal of the Balfour Declaration and of the Palestine Mandate.

The resolution pointed out that the Bevin policy is a “death sentence” to the surviving Jews in Europe who wish to proceed to Palestine. It protested against Bevin’s attempt to create a distinction between Jews and Zionists. “The city of Tel Aviv, together with all Jews of Palestine and with the Jewish people, will oppose by all measures at their disposal” the Bevin policy, the resolution said.

The session also adopted a resolution protesting against the emergency regulations issued by the Palestine Government, empowering every policeman to detain “suspeted illegal immigrants.”

As a result of efforts by former Syrian premier Jamil Mardam Bey, who came here as a representative of the Arab League, an Arab Higher Committee was formed this morning. It consists of five Husseinites, followers of the exiled Mufti of Jerusalem, are representative of each of the other five parties and two ostensible neutrals, one of whom is Musa el Alami, Palestinian delegate to the Arab League, and a cousin of the Hafti. The last Arab Higher Committee was ordered dissolved by the Palestine Government following the anti-Jewish outbreaks of 1936-37.

Using detecting instruments, British troops today discovered a mine under a bridge near the Hedera settlement and rendered it harmless.
