Forty million dollars will be needed to finance the repatriation and absorption of discharged Jewish soldiers, it was disclosed here today by Dr. Joseph Bart, an official of the finance department of the Jewish National Council, addressing a meeting on veterans’ problems.

The Palestine Government, he said, is providing $24,000,000, which includes the soldiers’ own savings, while $16,000,000 must be collected from Jews throughout the world. The Palestine Jewish community will be asked to contribute $6,000,000 of the latter figure.

Moshe Shertok, chief of the political department of the Jewish Agency, addressing the conference, said that “a struggle is going on between our small boats and the war ships of the others to save the Jewish remnants of Europe.” He stressed that the Bevin statement and the appointment of the Anglo-American inquiry committee are but phases of the struggle for a Jewish Palestine, which must be pressed more energetically than ever.
