Judge Joseph M. Proskauer, president of the American Jewish Committee, today addressed a cable to Secretary of State James F. Byrnes, now attending the Big Three conference of foreign ministers in Moscow, urging him to place before the meeting the “urgent problem of the immediate resettlement of the 100,000 Jews now in Germany.”
The cable emphasized that the request is based upon reports received from representatives of the American Jewish Committee in Germany, which indicate the need for taking all the displaced Jews out of Germany. “The problem of the survivors of Nazi terror has been further aggravated by the flight of thousands of Jews to Germany from unti-Semitic outbreaks in Poland,” the Committee stated. Provision of food, housing and clothing, vital as they are to the displaced Jews in Germany “does not go to the beart of the problem,” it declared.
