Discrimination against Jewish, Negro, and Catholic students in colleges in the city as well as elsewhere, was charged here today in a report presented to the Mayor’s Committee on Unity.
The report points out that in medical schools, in particular, but also in liberal arts colleges, discrimination has increased. “In the last decade preceding the war years the percentage of Jewish students of the total student body admitted to undergraduate colleges fell about 50 percent,” it says. It was also emphasized that many Jewish students have detoured into medicine through the path of spending several years in dentistry schools or in fields bordering on medicine.
Although most of the schools and university’s publicly deny the existence of discriminatory quotas, many deans and other faculty officials have admitted privately in conversations with committee members that such quotas are in effect, the report said.
It urged the establishment of a state or city-supported university, including full graduate and professional facilities, as a measure to provide the educational facilities denied by the private non-sectarian colleges.
