Dr. Isaac Ben Zvi, president of the Jewish National Council, and Chayim Salomon, president of the Jewish Community of Jerusalem, today issued a joint statement lauding the transfer by the United Synagogue of America of the Yeshurun Synagogue oldest house of worship in Palestine, and its site, to the Jewish National Fund.
The statement reads: “The Jewish community, particularly Jerusalem, welcomes the United Synagogue’s decision. Coming at this time, the decision serves as a fresh sign of confidence felt by the American Jews in the future Jewish development of Palestine. It is truly most appropriate that what became the central place of worship outside of the walled city should come under the trusteeship of the Jewish National Fund, which more and more is becoming the principal national trustee. Both the United Synagogue and the Jewish National Fund are to be heartily congratulated on their public spirited agreement.”
The deed to the property was handed over to the JNF last week by Samuel Rothstein, president of the United Synagogue, in a ceremony in New York.
