The United Nations Organization should act to guarantee a humanitarian solution of the problem of the Jewish survivors made homeless and stateless by the war, Sen. Harley M. Kilgore of West Virginia stated today, addressing a meeting here of the Central Ohio Conference of the United Jewish Appeal.
Senator Kilgore told the 225 delegates that the problem of Europe’s distressed Jewish survivors “is a world problem that concerns everyone.” Unless the uprooted Jews of Europe are given new roots,” he declared,” unless these dispossessed and outcast people are admitted into the company of free man, the whole world will be that much farther away from real security.”
The West Virginia legislator warned, at the same time, that Americans must “take safeguards in this country to see that fascism does not sweep to power by placing creed against creed, race against race, and color against color.” Asserting that American “must remain united if it is to escape the fate of Germany where civilization failed,” Senator Kilgore warned that “the seeds of hatred are now being sown in this country and if properly planted night become a threat to our democracy.”
The conference was also addressed by Dr. Imrich Rosenberg, Deputy Director of Repatriation in the Czechoslovakian Government, who arrived in the United States recently from Prague; Dr. Renzo Levi of Rome, president of the Jewish Relief Organization of Italy; and Captain Herschel Schacter, first chaplain to accompany American combat troops into the Buchenwald concentration camp.
