More than $1,100,000 worth of relief supplies of food, clothing, medicines and machinery–the greatest three months’ shipments in its thirty-one year history–were sent to Jewish survivors overseas in the first quarter of 1946 by the Joint Distribution Committee, it was announced today by Edward M.M. Warburg, chairman of the organization.
Mr. Warburg disclosed that the supplies are shipped “in an ever-increasing stream in a program designed to meet the extensive and imperative needs of Jewish sufferers in nearly fifty countries throughout the world.” He pointed out that the chief recipients of the JDC relief shipments, totaling more than 2,000,000 pounds, are Jewish survivors in Poland and Germany. “Joint Distribution Committee activities in the displaced persons centers of Germany and Austria are supplementary to the basic needs which the Army meets,” Mr. Werburg said.
