A mass meeting and demonstration called today by the rabbinical council of Washington and sponsored by the Louis D. Brandeis district of the Zionist Organization of America was attended by large numbers of Washington Jews who adopted a petition for presentation to British Ambassador Lord Halifax.

The petition, which was presented at the British Embassy this afternoon by a delegation elected at this morning’s meeting read in part: “The Jewish community of Washington, together with all other Jewish communities in the land and in other countries, is aghast at the callous and heartless policy of the Government of Great Britain, the Mandatory for Palestine on behalf of the League of Nations, in persistently violating the terms of the Mandate entrusted to it and in refusing the admission into Palestine of Jewish refugees from Europe anxious to enter their national homeland.”

While expressing gratification at the recent action of the British in promising the La Spezia refugees entry into Palestine, the petition expressed the “prayerful hope that the British Government may be inspired to change generally its harsh policy relating to the barring of Jews from their national homeland.”

Copies of the petition are being sent to President Truman and both Houses of Congress.
