Dr. Simon Flegner, world famous bacteriologist and pathologist, who was director emeritus of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, died here today. He was 83.
Dr. Flexner, who was a brother of the noted educator Abraham Flexner and of the late Bernard Flexner, an attorney who was active in Zionist and Jewish communal affairs, was born in Louisville, Ky., in 1863. He was educated at American and European universities and became a professor at Johns Hopkins University in 1891.
He was director of the Rockefeller Institute from its foundation in 1903 to 1935. During that time he also served on many government health missions and was an officer and director of many national medical groups. Dr. Flexner was chiefly noted for his contributions to the combating of epidemic diseases.
