Two persons were injured today when Arab terrorists in Beirut threw bombs into two Jewish stores in the center of the city. The terrorists succeeded in escaping.
Terrorists, believed to be Arabs, also invaded the premises of the U.S. Information Office in Beirut and set the office on fire using gun powder and gasoline. The fire was soon extinguished by members of the staff. An investigation is being conducted. It is believed that the arson was attempted as a demonstration of Arab protest against the recommendations of the Anglo-American inquiry committee.
British troops were called out tonight in Tel Aviv after sporadic firing and several explosions. No details are available at this late hour, but no casualties are reported. Unconfirmed information from Jaffa says that one Jew was killed there under circumstances not yet established.
Arab officials here and in Cairo today indicated that the Soviet Government has expressed its readiness to support presentation of the Palestine issue before the United Nations should any Arab state be willing to raise it.
The Egyptian Government today warned that it will not permit any street demonstrations tomorrow during the general strike which is to be held partly as a protest against the recommendations of the Anglo-American inquiry committee and partly “against the imperialist aims of Britain.” Any street gatherings will be dispersed, the government announcement said.
