UNRRA authorities here today received a joint request from the Vienna Jewish Community Council and the HIAS urging them to facilitate the repatriation of 1,500 of the 4,500 Austrian Jews in Shanghai.
Although the Austrian Government seems willing to assist refugee Jews to return if they so desire, very few have applied for repatriation. The reason for this is believed to be the fact that the refugees are fearful concerning the future of Jews in this country.
