The newspaper Reynolds News says today that Dr. Chaim Weizmann met this week with Colonial Secretary George Hall and had a “friendly talk.” The Jewish Agency office here said that it was unable to either confirm or deny the report.
The newspaper says that Dr. Weizmann made it clear that the release of the imprisoned Jewish Agency leaders was a pre-condition to any “fruitful talks.” It stresses the importance of the resumption of official contact between the Agency and the government.
The diplomatic correspondent of the Observer predicts today that Britain is unlikely to be deterred “by American hesitancy” from presenting its “federalization” plan to both the Arabs and the Jews at the projected London conference.
The Sunday Times, also supporting the government, repeats that President Truman’s stand on the Palestine issue is motivated by a desire to please Jewish voters.
A Reuters report from Rome says that the Pope yesterday received a delegation representing the Palestine Arabs. After leaving the Vatican, the Arabs said that the Pope had condemned present acts of violence in Palestine. (Another report of the meeting said that the Pope had also expressed disapproval of all manifestations of anti- Semitism.)
