The Italian Government today informed the Union of Jewish Communities that it will admit 500 Jewish orphans from refugee camps in various countries.

Unrra has completed establishment of a camp for displaced persons near Ravena. It is believed that the camp is being prepared to house some of the 25,000 Jewish DP’s whom the United States Government is anxious to transfer from the U.S. zone in Germany. In connection with the expected arrival of these refugees, a representative of the Joint Distribution Committee has left for the northern part of Italy to make the necessary arrangements for their reception.

Meanwhile, it was reported here today that thousands of Italians in southern Italy who are employed in camps for displaced Jews established in villas in Santo Maria, Marina di Leucca, Santa Cesarea and Trikosa Porto, submitted a petition to Unrra protesting a proposal to transfer the Jewish refugees from the villas to a camp in Bari. The ejection of the Jews has been demanded by the owners of the villas.
