Defying the Palestine Government, Jewish municipalities and local councils throughout the country last night pledged an initial $150,000 towards the $400,000 fund being raised by the Jewish National Council to finance Jewish immigration into Palestine, despite official restrictions.
After adopting a resolution voicing its determination not to relax the struggle against the white Paper and for increased immigration, the Tel Aviv municipal council voted to appropriate an initial installment of $100,000 towards the immigration fund. It will be financed by a one percent tax on all rentals.
The Haifa Jewish community voted $32,000 as a first contribution and Nathanya, Petach Tikvah, Chedera and Emek Chefer Jointly contributed $20,000. Supplementing these contributions, the Jewish National Council itself allocated $120,000, bringing the total already raised to nearly $275,000.
