The conference on Palestine will be resumed at 4 p.m. tomorrow to hear counter-proposals of the delegations of the seven Arab states to the British scheme for provincial autonomy for Jews and Arabs.
Scotland Yard today tightened security precautions following receipt of threats by Jewish leaders here, Several Jewish Agency officials reported that they have received letters from the “Jewish underground” warning them against participation in the Palestine conference.
Harry Goodman, secretary-general of the Agudas-Israel, turned over to police a note which said that Jews who attend the talks will be considered “Quislings to the Jewish people.” The Anglo-Jewish Association is also reported to have received similar warnings.
The New Statesman and Nation says today that Bevin “seems determined” to bar from participation in the talks the Agency members who are detained in Latrun prison in Palestine as well as David Ben Gurion. Declaring that the Foreign Minister’s stand is “very short-sighted,” the liberal weekly points out that a compromise agreed to by a few moderates, but rejected by the masses, would achieve nothing. It urges that Jews and Arabs be allowed to select their own delegations.
