The Chief Rabbi’s Religious Emergency Council today announced that it had dispatched a special rabbi to Cyprus to assist the 4,000 interned Jewish refugees there during holiday services.

Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog of Palestine, who is now in London, has issued a holiday message, through the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, calling on world Jewry for “material support and spiritual unity in this decisive hour of our supreme trial.”

The message continued: “The New Year dawns on a scene of protracted tragedy without parallel in Jewish history. Yet, at the same time, it holds out the prospect of national redemption more actual, more living than any other period in our exile. Zion has stood the test–the mournful tone of the shofar echoing over the last grave-yards of European Jewry mingles with the clarion call of Zion as she summons her children to rally to her cause.”
