A resolution recommending that unused war-time immigration quotas be utilized for the admission to the United States of thousands of displaced persons, “among whom the Jews represent a great majority,” was adopted today by the Resolutions Committee of the annual convention of the American Federation of Labor, now in session here.
The resolution, which runs counter to a recommendation by the AFL executive council which called for maintaining immigration bans, is expected to be adopted by the convention. It points to the fact that the Jews of Europe were the greatest sufferers during the war and that millions of them were murdered in the Nazis’ attempt to destroy them as a people.
It also stressed that now, without any permanent homes, the Jews find themselves in a worse predicament than any other people. The resolution says therefore it is the responsibility of the civilized nations to give the surviving Jews an opportunity to rebuild their lives under circumstances which will enable them to become full fledged members of society.
