Lieut, Col. Richard Webb, commander of the First Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, has been removed as a result of the anti-Semitic remarks he made to a group of correspondents last Thursday.
The official announcement of his suspension (which was reported by the JTA on Sunday) said that he had made remarks which were “both unauthorized and unofficial.” British military headquarters yesterday ordered a formal court of inquiry into the temporary detention of the correspondents. It is also understood that the status of the reporters is being investigated, since several are believed to be “unaccredited civilians.”
Abraham Rachlin, who was sentenced in 1941 to seven years imprisonment for illegal possession of arms in a trial which aroused world-wide interest, was released today after serving a few weeks more than three years. His co-defendant Leib Sirkin, who got ten years, was freed several months ago. During their trial the prosecution charged that the Jewish Agency was linked with a gigantic arms conspiracy.
