A three-power conference on the so called illegal emigration of Jews from eastern and central Europe who wish to enter France en route to Palestine has been proposed to Britain and the United States by the French Foreign Office, it was announced last night. Receipt of the French note was confirmed this morning by the British embassy here.
The Quai D’Orsay pointed out in its note that it was being embarrassed by the large numbers of Jewish refugees who arrive at the French borders from the U.S. zone of Germany without any valid passports or visas. It said that up to now France has been allowing 1,000 to pass through the country at one time, but stressed that some definitive policy on emigration must be arrived at.
A Foreign Office spokesman said yesterday that France was inclined to treat the refugees with the greatest liberality, but was not in a position to allow unlimited numbers to enter the country.
(In London a British spokesman said that the French note had only been received this morning and was under consideration, and, therefore, no comment could be made. In Washington a State Department spokesman told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that the department had no knowledge of the French note.)
