Poland informed the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee today that it will not insist on the repatriation of Jewish war orphans of Polish nationality.
This development came about during a Committee discussion of a revision of the original phraseology of the draft IRO constitution under which “no obstacle” would have been placed in the path of the repatriation of war orphans. A milder version of this provision was presented to the Committee providing for “all possible priority assistance” in the repatriation of war orphans up to 16 years of age. This was adopted after Polish delegate Manfred Laks served notice that his government will not act for the repatriation of Jewish children.
Last week the American Jewish Congress, World Jewish Congress and the Board of Deputies of British Jews urged that the constitution be amended to exclude Jewish children from repatriation.
