Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the World Zionist Organization, is determined to take an active part in the Zionist Congress which is scheduled to open on Dec. 9 in Basle, Switzerland, it was learned here today. He arrived in Lugano today from Zurich and will meet there with Moshe Shertok, head of the political department of the Jewish Agency, at the end of this month.
Prof. Selig Brodetsky, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews and a member of the Jewish Agency executive, today had an “informal talk” with Colonial Secretary Arthur Creech-Jones, following which he advocated Jewish participation in the London Conference on Palestine at a meeting of the Zionist Federation. Prof. Brodetsky declared that at one time he opposed partition, because he believed in a Jewish State on both sides of the Jordan, but that in light of the present world political situation, “we must accept a compromise which will permit Jewish immigration without asking anybody’s consent.”
Condemning terrorism in Palestine, Prof. Brodetsky warned that it would take a long time to eradicate the anti-Jewish effects of the British press “scare” campaign concerning the alleged attempts by “Jewish terrorists from Palestine” to infiltrate into England to assassinate prominent public figures. He also asserted that the anti-Jewish riots by British soldiers in Tel Aviv this week were caused by actions of Jewish extremists in Palestine.
Terrorism was also condemned today by Timon Marks, leading British Zionist, addressing a meeting of the United Palestine Appeal. Acts of terror, he said will not solve the Jewish problem. He expressed the hope that an honorable settlement of the Palestine issue will be achieved. He reported that the U.P.A. in England raised about $2,300,000 this year, compared with $2,168,000 last year.
