A country-wide general strike has been called for this Sunday by the Palestine Arab Higher Committee. The Committee said that the strike was being called “as a first step to protect Arab rights and existence.”
The announcement followed a press conference at which Hussein Khalidi, secretary of the Higher Committee, called for immediate independence of the country, with the Committee taking over the government and with the Arab defense groups being amalgamated into an Arab army. He called for withdrawal of the British and an immediate end to Jewish immigration.
It was rumored today that the Higher Committee has decided to take steps against the Haganah in reprisal for a raid yesterday on the Arab village of Salama by a band of Jewish youths who were allegedly members of the Haganah. An Arab who was kidnapped by the Jews returned to the village last night, reporting that he had been held for several hours in a house in Tel Aviv. He said that he had been questioned concerning an arms cache belonging to the Haganah which was recently stolen.
The Palestine Government is planning to establish an Arab university here, it was announced today by the head of the Education Department. Financial details and a schedule of courses have already been mapped out, the announcement said.
