More than 5,000,000 pounds of relief supplies were contributed during 1946 to the SOS (Supplies for Overseas Survivors) Collection of the Joint Distribution Committee, it was announced today by Mrs. Felix M. Warburg, SOS honorary chairman. Over 4,300,000 pounds of these supplies have been shipped overseas for distribution by representatives of the J.D.C. At the same time, Mrs. Warburg announced that the SOS Collection will continue to collect supplies during 1947 because “the need still is so acute.”
In a year-end report on the activities of the Collection, which is a special, continuing project of the J.D.C., in cooperation with 16 Jewish national and women’s groups, Mrs. Warburg stated that 760 communities throughout the United States now are taking part in the SOS campaign, with 230 of them organized on a city-wide basis. Contributed relief supplies being sought by SOS include foodstuffs, clothing, layettes, medicines, household and comfort items, foreign language books, recreational materials, religious, articles, and toys.
