Although a decree issued last year exempted Jews who were conscripted into slave-labor battalions by the Antonescu government from further military service, the Bucharest press reports that 8,000 Jews of the class of 1945 will be called up for service.
The conscription of the Jews is necessary because the recently drafted class of 1946 did not contain enough able-bodied men to make up the 100,000 total allowed Rumania under the peace treaty with the Allied powers. The calling up of an additional 4,000 Jews of the 1945 classification is also expected if the national police is unable to recruit up to its full strength, the paper says.
