Although the war in Europe has been over for nearly two years most French Jews who returned here from wherever they had been deported by the Germans have not succeeded in reoccupying their apartments.
In general, the complicated legal proceedings have been completed, resulting usually in the return of commercial premises, but not apartments. Even in the relatively few cases where the court has ordered apartments restored to Jews, the police have sabotaged the verdict by refusing to evict the present occupants on the basis that to do so would create disorder. The police authorities cite the Home Office as the source of their orders, while the Home Office refers questionaries to the police.
