The U.S. Government has appealed a District Court verdict dismissing the charges against the defendants in the 1942 Washington sedition trial, it was disclosed yesterday in a communication from Assistant Attorney General Theron L. Caudle to a conference of the Anti-Nazi League. Mr. Caudle revealed that the government’s appeal had been filed with the Court of Appeals in Washington on Friday.
Dr. James Sheldon, administrative chairman of the League, who was the principal speaker at the meeting, said that there are at least 20 groups and individuals in the country who are working in close cooperation with the anti-Jewish, anti-Negro Columbians. Herman Hoffman, chairman of the board of the League and president of the New York County Bar Association, revealed that he is preparing charges against Homes Loomis Sr., defense attorney for his Columbian son, for submission to the New York Bar. The charges will be based on the anti-Semitic and other racist remarks made by the attorney during the recent trial of Loomis Jr. in Atlanta.
