Witnesses Clear One Defendant in Trial of Five Dp’s Charged with Rioting

As the defense today began its presentation at the trial of five displaced Jews charged with rioting, assault and interference with traffic, several witnesses testified that Pinkus Hoggraf, one of the defendants, could not have been present on the seene of a clash between Austrian civilians and about 100 DP’s last February 19.

Samuel Melzer, chairman of the Riedenburg camp committee, told the court that Hoggraf, who is also a member of the committee, was present at a meeting of the group, which took place at the same time as the alleged riot. Questioned by the president of the American military court, Melzer stated that the committee meeting place was at the camp, some two miles from the scene of the incident. Melzer’s testimony was borne out by the secretary of the committee and three other members, all of whom gave a minute description of the procceedings of the session.
