Palestine’s Jews today marked the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Palestine Maritime League, which is sponsored jointly by the Jewish Agency, the Jewish National Council and the maritime section of the Histadruth to develop sea-going industries. A gala parade was held in Haifa, with Jewish leaders in the reviewing stand.
More than 3,000 people are gainfully employed in fishing, seafaring and other maritime pursuits. The League’s first post-war vessel, the 3,000-ton Kedma (Progress). will make its maiden voyage from Marseilles to Haifa this month, inaugurating a regular passenger and freight service between France and Palestine. The ship can carry 100 passengers.
The League’s plans for the future include the development of coastal shipping between Palestine and other Middle East countries, but the Arab boycott of “Zionist goods” has delayed its inception. The organization has established a nautical school at Haifa which graduates an average of 30 youths annually.
