David Ben Gurion, chairman of the Jewish Agency, ? night voiced opposition to the idea of a collective United Nations trusteeship ? Palestine. He spoke at a Labor Youth Council meeting in Alumoth, in the Lower ?lee district.
Ben Gurion asserted that a collective trusteeship of three or more powers ?d be worse than continuation of a mandate system administered by one nation. Re?ating his demand for the creation of a Jewish state in a part of Palestine, he ? a strong stand against bi-nationalism, declaring that unrestricted Jewish immi?tion and full-scale development of the country would not be possible in such a ?te. He insisted that without a Jewish state the Jewish people could not even ?tain spiritual or cultural independence.
The Jewish Agency executive has decided to call a full meeting of the Agency Jerusalem June 11, it was announced. It is expected that members of the London Washington divisions of the Agency will attend.
TRIAL OF JEWS CAPTURED DURING ATTACK ON ACRE PRISON IS POSTPONED
The trial of five Jews captured during the mass delivery of prisoners from ? Acre jail May 4, which opened before a military court here today has been postponed until Wednesday because of the illness of one of the defendants, who was carried into ?rt on a stretcher. The other four were chained during the brief session.
One hundred British soldiers armed with automatic weapons and supported by ?cred cars guarded the court. Wire mesh was placed across the windows of the building to prevent bombs being thrown through them.
The five are Jacob Weiss, whose illness led to the postponement; Meir Nakar, ?; Abshalom Habib, 20; Amnon Mikhaloff, 18; and Nachman Zitterbaum, 18. All are ?arged with illegally wearing military uniforms, firing at the police, carrying arms ?d planting mines. The maximum punishment for conviction on any of the charges is ?eath.
Nakar and Habib refused counsel, declaring they did not recognize the juris?dction of the court and would not participate in the proceedings. The two and Weiss were brought from Acre prison Friday night, despite their protests at the violation of the Sabbath. The other two defendants had been brought to a military hospital There earlier in the week. They have protested mistreatment at the hands of the police while in jail.
Four other Irgunists captured during the same operation when they were wounded will remain in government hospitals until they recover, when they will be brought to trial. They are Amnon Moshkovitz, Joseph Dar, Baruch Shmukler and Abraham Bel?kovsky.
