A joint committee of the Canadian Commons and Senate has been established to study the question of human rights and freedoms. The resolution setting up the committee was sponsored by Prime Minister William MacKenzie King and supported by the Liberal Party and Cooperative Commonwealth Federation.
The committee was instructed to consider the problem of human rights “in the ?ight of the provisions in the charter of the United Nations and the establishment by the Economic and Social Council there of of a commission of human rights.” It was ordered to determine the legal and constitutional situation in Canada in relation to such rights and to recommend measures for preserving fundamental freedoms in the country.
