Prominent American military figures, representatives of voluntary relief agencies and other Jewish leaders today paid tribute to the work of Rabbi Philip Bernstein, retiring advisor on Jewish affairs to the U.S. Army in Germany, at a luncheon here tendered by the Jewish Central Committee. A similar ?eremony will take place tomorrow at the Zeilsheim camp, near Frankfurt.
Rabbi Bernstein, who has scheduled to depart for the United States this Tues? after 15 months of service, has postponed his trip until he meets with the United nations Special Committee on Palestine subcommittee which will tour the DP camps of Germany and Austria this week.
During the past week he has toured camps in both countries with his successor, ?udge Louis E. Levinthal, and his legal aide, Abraham Hyman. He expects that the sit?ation of the Jewish infiltrees in Vienna will be eased considerably when the Austrian Government grants them the same status as the older DP’s. However, he said, the government is reluctant to do so because it would then be required to feed them.
