The Jewish National Council today called a ?tten-wide general strike for Monday afternoon to protest the landing of the Exodus refugees in Hamburg.
A group of 202 Jewish delegates sailed from Cyprus today for Haifa aboard the Ephthalia, a Panamanian vessel chartered by the Jewish Agency. Another group of 100 Jews will be taken to Palestine tomorrow on the same ship, completing the ## quota of 1,500 immigrants.
Meanwhile, in Tel Aviv, two young Jews who said they represented the Stern ##, called on 18 Jewish officials of the Government’s Income Tax Department in their homes today and warned them that unless they resigned within four days “the ##quences would be drastic.” The officials said that they will remain at their ##, in defiance of the threat. It is believed that the warninge are the first ## in a “psychological warfare” campaign to scare the Jews employed in the administration to resign en masse, thus crippling the Palestine government.Despite the apparent quiet in Palestine, an intensive struggle is going on between the Haganah and the Irgun Zvai Leumi, with the former attempting to curb the Irgun’s activities. Several clashes between the two forces have occurred recently.
In a particularly violent battle which took place in Tel Aviv this morning, a large group of Irgunists attacked a band of Haganah members who were removing Irgun posters. Employing fists, stones and clubs, the Jews battled for some time. Ten persons were injured, two seriously.
