A Foreign Office spokesman, denying today that the reduction of the Exodus refugees’ rations was intended as a punishment for their refusal to go to France, revealed that the deportees had 10 days in which to accept the offer. He said that 1,500 calories was the normal ration for DP’s in the British zone.
A statement issued by the Jewish Agency here termed the British offer a “provocation aimed at increasing the suffering” of the refugees. It said that the government was in error, if it believed it could dissuade the Jews from their desire to immigrate to Palestine by using threats and coercion.
