Ecuador Permits Jewish Refugee Immigrants Who Flew in to Remain After Hias Intervention

Ten Jewish refugees who flew to Guayaquil, Ecuador, last week as immigrants and were detained because the authorities refused to recognize ##as issued by the Ecuadorean embassy in Paris, have been permitted to remain after ##car Rocca, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society director in Ecuador, proved that the visas were valid, it was revealed here today by HIAS.

The remaining 18 refugees who landed in Ecuador en route to Colombia will be permitted to proceed, HIAS stated. At the same time, the organization pointed out that of the 3,200 Jews who settled in Ecuador since 1933, all but ten immigrated with the aid of HIAS. Rocca, who arrived here yesterday, was the first Jewish settler in the country.
