Acting on an urgent plea for assistance from the Jews of Aden, about 75 of whom have been killed and more than 100 wounded in recent Arab attacks, the Joint Distribution Committee has forwarded $11,000 for emergency aid to the British colony in addition to its regular relief program in ?den.
The call for help was relayed in a cablegram from Dr. Judah L. Magnes, President of the Hebrew University and chairman of the JDC Middle East Advisory Committee, following an Arab attack upon the small Jewish community in the port city of Aden. “Overnight hundreds became homeless and destitute,” Dr. Magnes reported. “Schools, synagogues, about 30 buildings and most Jewish shops were burned and looted.” He said the violence has “totally paralyzed” Jewish business in Aden, and most of the Jewish community there is now living on relief.
