Jewish Planes, Troops Repulse Arab Invasion From; Aid Jewish Settlements

An invasion of Palestine by 600 Arabs from Syria attacked two Jewish settlements two miles below the border was repulsed today by British war planes, paratroopers and cavalry supported by mobile artillery.

Troops were rushed to the assistance of the Kfar Szold and Tel EL Quada settle-##ts, which were attacked just after darn this morning, from the nearest British be at Metulla, 10-15 miles to the northwest. Paratroopers supported by three-inch tars and cavalry using two-inch, mortars mounted on armored cars broke the cordon established by the raiders and dispersed them, in retreat toward Syria. Casualty ?ures were given as three Jews killed and eight wounded.

It was officially announced that the Palestine Government has asked the British minister in Damascus to make strong representations to the Syrian Government concerning the incident.

A bomb was thrown at an Arab bus in Jerusalem today, injuring two Arabs. For ## first time in weeks sirens sounded after the blast. The Haganah revealed that ## Arabs were killed in fighting in the Beth Israel quarter yesterday during an ##tempt to break the blockade of some 4,000 Jews encircled in the Old City since## Friday.

ARAB “NATIONAL GUARD” AUTHORIZED TO KEEP ORDER IN ARAB AREAS

Last night, after the announcement of the government’s decision to recognize right of the Arab “National Guard” to keep order in Arab areas, a number of armed ?abs appeared in the Arab sections in pick-up trucks, sporting new arms and insignia.

A Haganah broadcast enumerated the names of the leaders of the “National Guard” ## stated that all were called to the Jerusalem district commissioner’s office last October and warned that they would be deported if they did not cease their terrorist activities, including the bombings of the American, Swedish and Polish casualties.

The announcer also charged that the British had joined the Arabs in firing .## Haganah men in the Yemin Moshe quarter yesterday, wounding several Jews. He ##lied that the Haganah had fired on the troops near Arza, which is the excuse the authorities gave for arresting a number of Jews and confiscating their arms.

The authorities removed the entire community’s store of arms in Nathanya, except for one rifle, and took them to Nablus.

A Jewish convoy crashed through the Safad cordon a second time last night the trucks came down from Tiberias and despite a heavy fire from entrenched Arabs all the vehicles passed through safely. The Haganah beat back a number of attacks yesterday and last night on the settlements of Tel Haim and Givat Rambam.
