Post-war building problems, involving plans for to construction of new buildings aggregating $27,000,000, for 148 Jewish community centers, ware discussed here yesterday at a one-day conference of representatives of centers and YM-YWHA’s throughout the country.
It was reported at the conference that a number of building projects are at present in various stages of development. Some of them have been held up, awaiting more favorable time for construction. A survey among leading economists, it was disclosed, established that prices of building supplies were expected to increase until about the spring of this year and, after reaching a new high, turn downward for the reminder of the year. However, a moderate increase in dollar volume of construction contracts is expected.
The conference was sponsored by the National Jewish Welfare Board, the parent body of 3l4 Jewish Community Centers and YM-YWHA’s, which has a total membership of close to 500,000. Of the 314 Centers, 253 own the buildings in which they function, and have and have an estimated total value of more than $40,000,000.
