U.S. Military Ejects Jewish Refugees from Camps; Deprives Them of Dp Status

Military police suddenly swooped down today on two Jewish displaced persona camps and removed more than 100 refugees, most of whom fled from Rumania within the last year. The action followed closely on the heels of Gen. ##cius Clay’s refusal to grant regular DP status to approximately 1,000 recently-arrived refugees from Rumania and Hungary.

One group of 55 persons, including 23 children between the ages of six months ##d 2 years, was taken in open trucks from the Leipheim camp to a German refugee center near Augsburg, about 35 miles from here. An equal number of Jewish refugees as evicted from the Neu Ulm DP camp.

It is expected that now these refugees will be dependent for food on the German Government and will be compelled to work in the German economy like all ##ermans.The two evictions ere the first known instances where Gen. Clay’s orders were implemented. Jewish observers pointed out that both evictions occurred in an area here Col. George Burgess is provost marshall. Burgess is the same officer, Jewish quarters disclosed, with whom they had much trouble during the past year, until he has transferred to Augsburg. It was also emphasized that Burgess’ present action is unfair” in view of the fact that the Army and the International Refugee Organization are still conferring on the problem of these newly-arrived refugees.
