Secretary Marshall is Non-committal on U.S. Recognition of Jewish State in Palestine

Secretary of State Marshall told his press conference today that he could not comment at this time on whether the United States will recognize the Jewish state in Palestine in the event that the U.N. fails to approve a provisional regime for the country between now and Friday at midnight when the Mandate expires. He said it was still too early to make any comment on the situation. We have to wait, he assorted, to see who does what when the Mandate ends.

The U.S. was urged to recognize the Jewish state and lift the Palestine arms embargo in a letter to Marshall from Senator James E. Murray and Rep. Emanuel Celler, made public here today. “Partition of Palestine is a fait accompli,” the letter stated, “and it is our considered judgment that failure on our part to recognize that fact would be a blunder of the highest magnitude.” The letter also urged the U.S. to extend a $100,000,000 loan to the Jewish state.

Approximately 200 members of the George Washington Logion called at the White House today to ask that they be granted permission to go to Palestine to aid the Jews in defending the country against possible Arab attack. The delegation, made up of would ### II veterans who registered with the American League for a Free Palestine, also ##### a group of Congressmen to press for legislation to protect their American ##### if they become numbers of a Jewish fighting force in Palestine.
