The British Government will not recognize the Jewish state when it is proclaimed, Reuters, quoting a “reliable source,” reported here today. Reuters added that It is understood that Britain’s attitude would be the same toward any Arab state which might be formed.

Meanwhile, a foreign. Office spokesman, asked whether the government would recognize the Jewish state, said that the question was “hypothetical.” The matter will be decided when the problem arises, he continued.

An appeal to the Jew and Arabs in Palestine to realize that a compromise is still possible and offering the British Government’s serviced in behalf of a solution which would not have to be imposed on either party by force is contained in a 5,000-word joint proclamation issued today by the Colonial and Foreign Ministers on the Occasion of the termination of the Palestine Mandate.
