Austria is studying the question of extending recognition to Israel but is waiting to see whether Britain and France will follow the American and Russian examples first, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry declared today.

Meanwhile, a representative of Chancellor Leopold Figl’s office asserted here that the Austrian Cabinet is in favor of granting Israel official recognition since Austria, like the Jewish state, knows from first-hand experience of the struggle for liberty which the Jews are making. He added that the creation of diplomatic relations between the two countries in the near future is particularly important since this would ease the emigration from Austria of 20.000 displaced Jews.
