The 27 delegates from countries in the Soviet zone of influence who abstained yesterday from participation in the elections of the executive of the World Jewish Congress today sent two observers to the first meeting of the new body.
Dr. Nahum Goldmann, who presided at today’s session, expressed the hope that after they consult with their home groups in Warsaw, Bucharest, Budapest and Sofia, respectively, the abstainees will Join the executive. A total of seven seats was left open yesterday for delegates from the four countries. Chief subject on the agenda of today’s meeting was the question of intervention in behalf of Jews residing in Arab countries.
The American delegates are satisfied that they upheld the principle of autonomy in the elections, permitting each country to determine its own representative to the Congress’ central organs, a spokesman for the U.S. group told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent.
A reception in honor of all the delegates was given last night by the American delegation. Later, the delegates attended a film depicting the revolt of the Warsaw Ghetto which was brought to the Montreux meeting by the Polish delegation. Many of the delegates will leave today for Paris to attend a Jewish cultural conference opening on Friday.
