Jews Reject Jerusalem Chase-fire Order; U.N. Mediator Warns of Great Responsibility

U.N. Palestine mediator Count Folke Bernadotte today stated here that Israel has turned down his latest cease-fire proposal for Jerusalem in which he directed the Jews and the Arabs not to return any fire directed at them after 2 A.M., New York time, today.

By rejecting his order, the Jews, he said, are taking a great responsibility. He added that the Arabs informed him of their decision to comply with his order. He expressed the hope that they would maintain this decision. At the same time, he voiced disappointment over the destruction by Arabs of the Latrun water pumping station.

The U.N. mediator left Rome today for Geneva by special plane en route to Stockholm to participate in the International Red Cross Conference which opens there on August 20. The state of Israel has formally accepted the invitation to attend this conference and its delegation is now preparing to leave for Sweden, it was harmed here today.
